The Miranda Sings Award

miranda sings

I was nominated for this award by Fatima @ Noteable Pad and Katherine @ Fabled Haven! Thank you both so much! Sorry it’s taken me so long to get around to posting it! 🙂

I love that this award encourages people to feel positive about themselves, although I actually struggled to come up with 7 things. Like a lot of people, I find it much easier to criticize myself than praise myself—or I could point out my more “negative” traits that I don’t really mind, like “I’m bossy” or “I’m short-tempered” haha!

  • Announce your win with a post, and link the blogger who nominated you.
Include the featured image on your blog post.
  • Nominate 10 bloggers (or as many as you can think of) and link your awardees in the post.
  • List seven (7) things you love about yourself. (This can be about your appearance, your personality, your achievements, etc.)
  • Don’t use negative connotation (i.e. Don’t say things like – “I’m prettier than an average person.” or “People have told me I’m smart.” You are pretty. You are smart.)

I’m honest. Not just in the vaguely mean way either, though I suppose I mean that, too. I don’t think honesty just means “tell someone your mean opinion”, I think it means the good stuff too, so if I think one of my friends looks nice, I’m going to tell them that they look nice.

I’m smartUsually I’m hesitant about saying this, though I don’t really know why. I’ve always been “academic” in that I always did well at school. I achieved a first on my undergraduate degree, and I’m doing a masters degree. So I’m smart in that sense, but I’m also quick to learn more generally. If I want to learn how to do something, I google it, read up on it, and then usually I can do said thing competently after a couple of tries.

I’m a good listener. Sometimes, things just don’t need my opinion (I know, I’m shocked too) and I like to think that I know when to just listen to what someone has to say. I like to think that, most of the time, I can distinguish between when someone wants advice, and when they just want someone to listen to them.

I’m more confident. A few years ago I could barely manage to say thanks to a bus driver, let alone start a conversation with someone I didn’t know.  I’ve learned to be more comfortable with myself and now social situations in general are nowhere near as daunting as they used to be!

I make people laugh. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I’m funny, but I am pretty good at cheering people up.

I’m tough. Not to get Real™ during a tag, and without going into detail, but last December was easily the worst month of my entire life, but I got through it, and I’m pretty proud of that. I don’t mind being the responsible one, and I don’t mind being the person people lean on when things get hard.

I’m kind. Like I said before, I make an effort to say nice things to people—specifically things that I actually mean—because I know how much a compliment can brighten someone’s day.

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

sisterhood award

I was nominated for this award by the wonderful Katherine @ Fabled Haven!

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site.
  • Put the award logo on your blog.
  • Answer the questions the tagger has given you.
  • Nominate ten other bloggers.
  • Make up ten new questions for your nominees to answer.

1. Which fictional animal/pet would you bring to life? (ex: Chainsaw from The Raven Cycle, Hedwig from Harry Potter)

I’d actually go with Chainsaw from The Raven Cycle! I’ve mentioned this before, but I love birds, but I like corvids most of all, because they’re really intelligent.

Believe me, I know exactly how sad that sounds haha!

2. If you could steal any fictional character’s life, who would it be?

I actually struggled with this because I feel like I usually read about people in really awful situations haha! Maybe Sophie in Howl’s Moving Castle, because I feel like going anywhere or doing anything with Howl would be nothing but entertaining.

3. What’s your favorite book-to-movie adaptation?

Probably The Hunger Games films, I’ve always been really impressed by them. They managed to expand the world, because it’s not strictly from Katniss’ perspective, and I thought they did it really well. I also like that it gives that added layer of you being a spectator to the Games, especially in the first film, because you get to be both in and outside the arena.

4. What fairy-tale retelling would you be interested in reading? (For example, I’m really into retellings of The 12 Dancing Princesses!)

I kind of love Red Riding Hood retellings, more specifically ones in the vein of Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chambermoreso than things like Marissa Meyer’s Scarlet

5. What’s your go-to snack when reading?

I have a real thing for sweet & salt popcorn, so it’s probably that. As a plus, it’s probably the least messy of snacks, so I don’t have to worry about getting my grubby fingers all over my books.

6. Who are some of your favorite bands/artists?

know they’ve split up now, but My Chemical Romance will always be my faves.  I also love Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco…and I’m realising that this makes it sound like I just stopped listening to new music in 2007…

7. Would you rather only be able to buy 1 book a month OR have unlimited access to borrowing books from the library?

Probably one book a month, because my TBR pile is big enough as it is, and only being able to get one new book would help me actually cut into it. I’d be way too tempted by the library.

8. Would you rather find one place to settle in for the rest of your life OR move around every 2 years?

Settle. I think? I’d probably end up feeling a bit lonely if I moved around all the time. Plus, moving is hard work and I’m lazy.

9. Do you prefer musicals or plays?

Musicals! I haven’t been to see too many plays, so I don’t really have much of a comparison to go on, but I so really love musicals.

10. Who is your ultimate fictional crush?

It’s been years, but I’m pretty sure I fancy Sirius Black just as much as I did the first time around haha!

  1. Do you prefer to marathon a series, or read the books as they come out?
  2. What’s the most inspiring movie you’ve seen/book you’ve read?
  3. What’s your favourite genre? (Books or films!)
  4. What’s your least favourite genre? (again, books or films!)
  5. Have you ever put yourself on a book buying ban? If so, how did it go?
  6. Paperback books or hardback books?
  7. What’s your pet peeve?
  8. What’s your favourite Disney movie?
  9. What are some of your favourite albums?
  10. How would you spend your perfect rainy day?

Have fun! 🙂

This is a scheduled post as I’m currently away on holiday! Unfortunately I may not be able to answer comments and the like until I’m back, but I’ll probably be around on Twitter and Instagram 🙂

Versatile Blogger Award

I was nominated for this award by the lovely Lauren @ Wonderless Reviews and Casey @ adoptabookaus! Thank you both 😀

  • Show the award on your blog
  • Thank the person who nominated you.
  • Share seven facts about yourself.
  • Nominate fifteen blogs.
  • Link your nominees and let them know of your nomination.

  1. I don’t know if I’ve talked about my job on here or not, but I’m a supervisor on a concession in my local department store. I started working there when I was 18, starting out as a sales assistant, and I’ve been there for 4 years now! I’ll actually be kinda sad when I have to leave.
  2. The first band I ever saw live was Paramore. I saw them in Manchester way back in 2009.
  3. My first pet was a hamster that I called Pippin after the dog from Come Outside (does anyone remember that/even know what it was? I could never remember the name of it, but I’ve always remembered the dog!)
  4.  My favourite cartoon was/is one from the ’80s called Trap Door. I only found out recently that it never actually aired when I was a kid, my mum and dad bought it for themselves and I somehow learned how to play the VHS tape myself? It’s weird as hell, I loved it.
  5. I love making lists. I literally write them all the time.
  6. love lipstick, and I usually end up favoring one particular lipstick for ages for no real reason. For instance, at the moment my go-to is Charlotte Tilbury’s Bitch Perfect, mostly because I love the name.
  7. I really enjoy painting my nails. I find it really relaxing for some reason. As a consequence of this, my nail polish collection is out of control.

I’m not sure who has/hasn’t done this, so I’m just going to tag a couple of new-ish followers:

  1. The Jouska Blog
  2. The Mystery Corner
  3. Chic Nerd Reads

As always, if you’ve already been tagged, or you don’t want to do it, that’s totally fine! 🙂

Have fun!

I was nominated by Izzi @ Ravenclaw Book Club , Fatima @ NotablePad, and Jill @ Rant and Rave Books! Thank you guys so much! 🙂

  • Write a post to show your award.
  • Give a brief story of how your blog started.
  • Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers.
  • Thank whoever nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
  • Select 15 other blogs you want to give the award to.

It actually took me a really long time to convince myself to start a blog. Beyond having a LiveJournal and a Tumblr, I’d not had a “real blog”, and I was very shy in regard to putting myself out there, etc. etc. etc. I took a Creative Writing module in my last year of university, and that gave me greater confidence in my writing all round, and I began to think about starting a blog, but literally months passed before I made my account. My main motivation was really that I was finishing uni, and I still really wanted to talk about books. I’d spent three years of my life talking about them, and I wasn’t ready to stop. When I started my masters, I realised that I had one year left of studying books, but thinking critcally about books was a habit I wanted to keep, so I started the blog, and here I am!

I can’t imagine I’ll be saying anything that other people haven’t already said, but I suppose if you keep hearing it, then it’s good advice! First of all I’d say to pick a focus. For instance, this is obviously a book blog, so you’ll expect that the main feature of this blog is going to be books. Naturally, some things go hand in hand, like it wouldn’t be too off-topic for me to talk about a film or a TV show on here, and I do talk about writing, but I do have a primary focus.

This one might seem obvious but be yourself. People might find your review through Google, or Twitter, or wherever, but they’ll stay because of you. Ultimately it’s your opinion that you’re putting out there. It’s easy to get bogged down in worrying that you don’t read what other bloggers read, or you really don’t like a series that’s really popular, or you don’t read as much as other people, but really, that doesn’t matter. I figure you follow people based on their personalities, or the impression you get from them when you read their post, not just for the books they read. You have to value your own opinion, and you have to assume that people will be interested in your thoughts.

Ah, I’m sort of cheating here, but I’m not actually going to nominate anyone for now. I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t been nominated! (That being said, if you haven’t been tagged, do let me know and I’ll tag you!). But thank you again to all the lovely people that nominated me 🙂

I was tagged by Emily @ Rose Read, thank you! 🙂 I love your questions for this!

  • Thank and link the blogger that nominated you.
  • Answer the 7 questions that the nomination has provided you.
  • Create 7 questions for your nominees.
  • Nominate 7 other bloggers.

1. Where are you from? What’s your favorite thing about that place?

When I was little, I lived in North Wales, but I’ve spent most of my life living in Yorkshire. I actually live in Bronte country, and I’ve never been to the Bronte parsonage which is really, really bad haha! My favourite things about living here is that most places look pretty, because it’s the countryside, that famous Northern charm—for the most part, people are really friendly, and I’ve made plenty of old lady friends just waiting at the bus stop 😉

2. If you could have any fictional creature as a pet, what would it be?

A phoenix! Obviously I was going to pick a bird.

3. Have you ever met an author and got a book signed? Who? What was your conversation like?

Yes! When I was seven, and I met Jacqueline Wilson! I didn’t even know there was a signing going on until we saw a huge queue out of Borders (moment of silence for Borders, please) my mum saw her friend in the queue, and she told us.. Jacqueline Wilson was my all-time favourite author, I’d read so many of her books, and lots of them I’d read over and over again, so I was really nervous about meeting her. When I actually did meet her, I worked up the courage to tell her that she was my favourite and that I wanted to be a writer too, and she wished me luck!

dustbin baby

Side note: did anyone else have to share everything with their sibling so they wouldn’t feel left out?

Given that this was over ten years ago, I’ve realised that I should probably endeavor to go to more book signings.

4.What are your top 3 favorite animated films?

This is so hard! I’m lumping all the Toy Story films into one, because I couldn’t possibly choose between them. I went to see Toy Story 3 in the cinema and had to try very hard not to cry. Similarly, any of The Land Before Time films, which were my all-time favourites as a kid, owing to my heavy dinosaur phase (my favourite character was Chomper, in case you were wondering, which obviously you were). And I really love How to Train Your Dragon.

5.Longest book you ever read?

A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin comes in at 1217 pages, so it’s the longest book I’ve read by a long way, with the exception of A Storm of Swords which is probably a similar length, but I have the paperback editions so it’s split into two parts.

6.What’s a hyped book you have 0 interest in reading?

Maybe Cassandra Clare’s books? So many people love them, but I feel like for every good thing someone says about her books, I hear a bad thing. I can never make up my mind whether I want to read her books or not!

7.What’s your favorite time of the day to blog?

When it comes to writing reviews and stuff, I usually handwrite them first whenever I have a spare minute. Usually, I end up typing them up in the evening and that’s when I reply to comments and read and comment on other people’s posts, too. It’s a nice way to wind down at the end of a long day 🙂

  1. What’s your favourite book of the year so far?
  2. What’s the most overhyped book you’ve read?
  3. Who are your favourite authors?
  4. What book would you recommend to everyone?
  5. What’s your favourite book to film adaptation?
  6. What are you currently reading?
  7. What’s the last book you did not finish?

I’ve seen so many of these posts lately, so I’m not entirely sure who has been nominated and who hasn’t! So for now I’ll nominate Jill @ Rant and Rave About Books and Julianne @ Quilltricks!

I was nominated for the Liebster Award by noteablepad — thank you! 🙂 She has a lovely blog, so I’d really recommend you check her out!

1. Thank the person who nominated you, and post a link to their blog on your blog.
2. Display the Liebster Award on your blog — by including it in your post and/or displaying it using a “widget” or a “gadget”. (Note: the best way to do this is to save the image to your own computer and then upload it to your blog post.)
3. Answer the 11 questions about yourself, which will be provided to you by the person who nominated you.
4. Provide 11 random facts about yourself.
5. Nominate 5 – 11 blogs that you feel deserve the award, who have a less than 1000 followers.
6. Create a new list of questions for your nominee bloggers to answer (if you want to).
7. Inform the people/blogs that you nominated that they have been nominated for the Liebster Award and provide a link for them to your post so that they can learn about it (they might not have ever heard of it!) or list these rules in your post (you can copy and paste from here.)

1. If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be?

Literally any kind of bird. For no other reason than that I really love  birds.

2. If you could have any superpower, what would that be and why?

The ability to manipulate time! I wouldn’t want to go back years and years or anything like that, I just think it’d be nice to pause time to do little things like, get a few more hours of sleep, or read a few more chapters, or realistically, write an essay that I’ve left to the last minute.

3. A Genie appears and grants you 3 wishes! What would you ask for?

I want to say unlimited books, but then I’d feel bad for not supporting authors etc. with my money, so how about an unlimited fund with which I buy books? I suppose I’d need a place to put all those books, so I guess my second wish would be for a fancy house with a library. Finally, I suppose I’d rather not be in debt, so I’d wish for my loans to disappear. I don’t ask for much 😉

4. Name an inspirational figure in your life- can be anyone (even fictional characters).

I know I mentioned Remus Lupin in a post not too long ago, but guys, I really want to be Lupin.

More seriously, I suppose anyone who works really hard to do what they most enjoy is inspirational to me — J.K. Rowling being the most obvious one, but also writers like Stephen King, and even Haruki Murakami (he talks a bit about his work process in this interview, but he basically dedicates a solid six months to his first draft, then rewrites four or five drafts in the following seven to eight months. The guy’s dedicated).

5. What is the worst food you’ve had in your life?

Once when I was around fifteen and staying at a friend’s house we bought a recipe kit for chicken katsu curry. We followed the instructions to the letter and it was Not Good. It had no taste to speak of, and the texture of the sauce was so gritty it was like eating sand.

6. Do you prefer having a large circle of friends, or a few?

Definitely a few. I probably do have a relatively large circle of friends/acquaintances (mostly because I work in a department store, so a lot of people work there and we all talk to each other) but I think you always end up having like, an inner circle of your closest friends.

7. What is the kindest act you have ever done for someone?

I actually don’t know! I do try to be kind in small ways, like helping people lift their prams or buggies up the stairs or onto trains; escorting old ladies in the lift when I’m at work (I literally do this all the time; people at work tease me for it). I can’t think of one big one, obviously I need to try harder haha!

8. What is your favourite season?

My immediate thought was to say summer, because summer = warm weather and no responsibilities! But this summer I have to write a 20,000 word dissertation, so I’m saying winter. I love cosying up, and I love the atmosphere around Christmastime. Also, all the coffee shops have the best drinks during winter, and I’m a sucker for a gingerbread latte.

9. Who in the world do you hate with a passion (can also be fictional), and is there a story behind this hatred? (unless you’re the most forgiving person in the world)

I can’t think of a real person, so I have a really obvious fictional character, and it’s Umbridge. I hated her so much when I first read The Order of the Phoenix that I used to put off reading it when I did my series rereads. I never skipped it, but it used to take me a really long time to convince myself.

10. Would you rather be beautiful with the memory of a fish OR intelligent and cursed with a face like Gollum?

This is quite easy for me really, because I already have a face like Gollum, so it’d be nice to have the intelligence.

I’m kidding, obviously, but I think that’s the one I’d go for. Besides, what can’t make-up do these days, eh? 😉

11. What is your biggest fear?

I’m giving you two:

  1. I get in the shower. I wear contacts/glasses, so obviously I can’t see anything. I have  a nice, long shower. I take my time. But then, when I get out, I realise there was SPIDER in the shower the ENTIRE TIME so I effectively SHARED A SHOWER with the WORST CREATURE on this earth.
  2. Similarly, I get into bed and there is a SPIDER ON MY PILLOW. How can I sleep knowing that a spider has been there?? Where I sleep?? The most sacred of places??

  1. In case you hadn’t guessed from that last question, I really hate spiders.
  2. When I was a kid, I really, really wanted to be an archaeologist, and then when I learned that you could just study Ancient Egypt, I wanted to be an egyptologist.
  3. I was also really obsessed with dinosaurs. My mum still can’t bear anyone mentioning Barney.
  4. I find a nice cup of tea incredibly comforting. It’s the first thing I do when I wake up and when I get home.
  5. Incidentally, while (if I do say so myself) I make a great cup of tea, I make really awful coffee.
  6. My favourite TV show is Breaking Bad. Nothing even comes close to it for me.
  7. I studied English Language, English Literature, and Psychology at A Level.
  8. I love sweet potato. It might even be my favourite food. I tried it for the first time last year and I can’t believe I’ve gone so long without it.
  9. I have 3 dogs; their names are Bobby, Paddy, and Teddy.
  10. My favourite musical is Les Misérables. So far I’ve been to see it twice.
  11. My favoruite film franchise is Star Wars. I always liked it, but the release of The Force Awakens has made me fall completely in love with it again.

As always, if you’ve already been tagged, or if you don’t want to do it, then that’s fine 🙂
