Books I’d Like to Read in 2017

2017tbr

For a long time, I’d assumed that things like monthly TBRs don’t really work for me because I’m mostly a mood reader. That, coupled with the fact that for the last four years I’d had mountains of assigned reading, I never really liked tying myself to reading certain books within a certain time frame.

As it turns out, I was dead wrong, and setting tentative TBRs has actually helped me a lot in getting around to reading books that have been sitting around my room for ages. I made a post like this last year and you might notice that a couple of the books that I mentioned last year, are also on this list. That’s mostly because I was lazy, and didn’t push myself to read them, so they’re top priority this year. I’m thinking about setting a “theme” for myself each month—for instance, I’ve decided that I’ll read only fantasy books in February. This way I know I have to read certain books.

Very quickly, the books I’m carrying over are The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson, Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb, and The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. I talked about them a little in last year’s post, so I won’t go into them here. On the plus side, I did read two of the books on last year’s list so that’s not bad, right? 2 out of 5? Right.

Anyway, here are the books that I’m making a priority in 2017. As always, the covers will take you to the Goodreads page.

THE WISE MAN’S FEAR BY PATRICK ROTHFUSS

2495563

If you’ve seen my 2016 favourites, you’ll know that The Name of the Wind was one of my favourite books of last year. Ideally I’d have liked to read this, the sequel, right after, but that didn’t happen (mostly because I was worried about not hitting my Goodreads challenge goal but…honestly, that’s an entirely different post). In any case, I’m very excited to see what direction this series takes, and I’ll absolutely be reading this soon.

RED SEAS UNDER RED SKIES BY SCOTT LYNCH

1473780

Again, the first book in this series, The Lies of Locke Lamora, was one of my favourite books of last year. I didn’t rank my favourites but, if I did, The Lies of Locke Lamora would have taken the top spot. I’m so, so excited to read the next book, and will probably move right on to the third book, The Republic of Thieves straight away.

RED RISING BY PIERCE BROWN

18046624

I actually started reading this a few years ago, but for some reason, I couldn’t get into it. I’ve seen such amazing reviews for this book so I really do want to give it another shot!

WINTER BY MARRISA MEYER

25774272

I have such a bad habit of not reading the final books of series for a really, really long time. I read Cress, the third book, back in 2014, and I picked up Winter on its release date. I still haven’t read it, despite really enjoying the series.

ORYX AND CRAKE BY MARGARET ATWOOD

18479697

I read The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood a few years back, and I picked up the entire MaddAddam trilogy not long after. Oryx & Crake is the first book in the trilogy. I’ve been wanting to read more Margaret Atwood for a long time, so I figure it’s best to continue with the books I already own!

HALF OF A YELLOW SUN BY CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE

31216959

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an author whose work I really, really want to read. I own Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, and I’m not really sure which one I want to begin with. With any luck, I’ll read both before the year’s out!

CLOUD ATLAS BY DAVID MITCHELL

11144126

This is another book that I’ve owned for a really long time. I’ve been putting off reading it because I’ve managed to convince myself that it’s intimidating? Since I had a pretty good track record last year in terms of enjoying books that I’d been putting off, I’m hoping to read it this year.

So those are some of the books that I’m hoping to read over the course of the year! I’m actually hoping to get as close to halving my physical TBR (i.e. the books that I actually own) as possible, so it’s likely that I’ll get around to most of these. I currently own well over 100 books that I own and haven’t read. So that’s a thing that needs to not be happening.

If you’ve read any of these books, I’d love to know what you thought of them 🙂

  1. The Wise Man’s Fear is so, so good! ❤ Also Half of a Yellow Sun! 😍 I know I repeat myself a lot but these books are just so amazing!

  2. It’s interesting because I actually struggle to watch the last season/episode of tv shows but typically have no issue finishing a book series. Of course now that I’ve said this…..
